This July the Asheville Art Museum once again hosts The Big Crafty, a lively celebration of handmade commerce. Reviving the tradition of the community bazaar, there will be music, food and refreshments to enjoy, as well as the fine wares of over 100 independent crafters. In “The Funk & Wag from A to Z”, originally curated by Ann Harithas for the Nave Museum in Victoria, TX, artist Mel Chin extracted images from all 25 volumes of the 1953 Funk & Wagnall’s Encyclopedia and re-edited them a collages, unleashing the potentiality of images trapped by historical context. Chin’s inspiring piece is showcased alongside new configurations of more recent works by the artist in this exhibition.
