The Heritage Alliance is proud to host Dr. Thomas R. Peake at the Jonesborough Visitor’s Center on Thursday, February 7th as he speaks on the history and future of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. Peake is a native of Norton, Virginia. He studied at King College, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught at King College in Bristol, TN, for over 35 years and is now Professor Emeritus of History. He is also the author of Keeping the Dream Alive: A History of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from King to the 1980’s. Dr. Peake has led various conversations and discussions throughout the world. His topic on February 7th will be “The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Then and Now: the Origins of SCLC and Reflections on its Role Today.” This presentation will use PowerPoint images to enhance the analysis of the origins of SCLC in the 1950’s and its commitment over the years to keeping its dream alive. This event is open to the public and begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. This will be the first of two conversations hosted by the Heritage Alliance in February. The next one, “Region, Race, and Memory: Inheriting the Civil War”, will take place on February 28th.
